Kinky = Bliss!

I constantly read and hear things that reinforce a widely accepted idea that kinky hair is unacceptable, more difficult to style than any other hair type, unattractive and should be avoided as much as possible. These comments and ideas irritate me. Really badly.

You want examples. So I’ll mention Oprah’s stylist Andre Walker, who, in an interview stated that kinky hair is the only hair type he recommends chemically altering due to its limited styling options. Then there was the time my aunt, who is natural, told me that no one (among some people with whom she’s familiar) wanted to do her hair because they said it was too short (we’re talking hair that is at least six inches in length here)! Not to mention the teenager in a soon to be released documentary (I forget the name) who says in disgust how absolutely gross it is to wake up and see your natural hair in the morning! – These kinds of comments which range from showing a lack of self-love and appreciation to pure ignorance are what I’m talking about!

So let me just say kinky hair is fabulous! There are more than plenty styling options, and as with anything in life, being natural requires that the ‘wearer’ spend some time and put effort into making the hair look wonderful. But don’t be deceived. It can be done! The widespread use of social media and increasing tolerance for natural styles among many in society make going/being natural even easier.

On YouTube there are numerous videos for people with all types of kinky hair and they range from maintenance to step by step styling options. There are also myriad blogs and websites from which to glean a lot of information and garner support as sometimes feeling good about kinky hair (in this world) can become challenging.

Above are a few pictures of women with kinky hair whose hairstyles range from locs to fros and are proof that there’s a lot you can do with kinky hair and that being kinky does not compromise your beauty!

Many thanks to Akilah White, Victoria Thomas, Tiaundra Shirley, Zakiya Stanley, Sheena Gayle & Claudia Gardner for photos!

    I love my kinks, drawback I cant style it (have idea but cant convert) that’s one of the reasons I decided to loced it for a while

    • aww. I understand and def agree that it can be challenging. But I think if you can find a few styles that you’re comfortable with, you should be okay. My go to styles when I was natural were gel in the hair (which lasted for at least 3-4 days) and chiney bumps that I would do and pull out to achieve a cute little curly fro. Recently, I saw a style that was done with like 4c hair on perm rods – really nice look! But what I’ll do is try to put you on to some of the blogs etc that I used to follow.
