Lovin Lupita

Yesterday, when I began writing this post, I figured it was safe to say that until she dons another show stopping gown, gives a brilliant speech or wins a new award, the furore over Lupita Nyong’o has calmed. Only to discover that she is now the newest face of Lancome – the first feat to be accomplished by a black woman!

Actress Lupita Nyong’o

So while I worried that my musings might be considered a little too late, I proved myself correct in that ‘I’m never on schedule, but always on time’ 😉

After I saw the movie Twelve Years a Slave, I couldn’t help but be intrigued by Lupita. I searched for an interview on YouTube in order to discover more, and after the first video I was hooked. Many videos later, I was mesmerized! Sure she is lovely to look at; what with her flawless chocolate complexion, unique hairdo, and fabulous sense of style. But what piqued my interest, no, commanded my attention, was how profound she is as a person!

Lupita Nyong’o makes me proud to be a black girl from the ‘Third World’. She is a woman with a story to tell. She is one of those people who forces you (in the gentlest manner) to ignore skin deep beauty and take note of more lasting qualities like perseverance, humility, inner strength and intelligence.

Nyong’o is an eloquent speaker and I feel as though every time she speaks, she reminds us all – but especially black children and minorities – to dare to aim for big things, things they say you can’t do, things you don’t think you can do. She reminds us with every award, every strut down a red carpet and every magazine page on which she is featured that despite our beginnings, no dream is impossible to achieve.

Eve Style ‘Tun Up

Tun Up – Modern Jamaican slang meaning great, exciting, awesome and the like.

Example of usage: A very sexy lady is wearing an awesome outfit and you wish to complement her. You would say ” yuh ting tun up” meaning she looks unbeatable, stunning, like a million dollars.
[Definitions taken from Dancehall Reggae World & Urban Dictionary]

That said, let me declare that Eve is back and her ting tun up! I am referring to her style as well as her music (or what I have heard of it thus far).

I was surfing the net and somehow got to looking at interracial couples when I saw a photo of a white guy and a gorgeous, spiffy looking black chick. I couldn’t identify either of them readily and set about sleuthing.

To my surprise said woman was Eve (of Ruff Ryders and sitcom/Barbershop fame) . She was looking quite fab; I was impressed!

I'm sorry about the poor quality; but I liked the way her top was captured in this photo.

I then learnt that Eve has a new album out, it’s called Lip Lock. I watched a few interviews she has done since launching the album in May and let me tell you – the girl’s style is on fire!!! She has the look of chic elegance down pat and I am loving it (please click the link in sentence above to see her black and white suit in Hot 97 interview)!

I listened to the first three singles that she’s released and it’s good stuff. I’m loving the beats &  lyricism on Eve and She Bad Bad. The single Eve  gives off an upbeat vibe laced with confidence and reminds you of authentic rap. I’m also lovin’ her style in the video. The shades, chains, bangles, outfits – all fly and fab!

Eve truly embodied the punk theme at this year's Met gala; but you know the media never highlighting what's right! -_-

So you see, I had to get my Jamaican Creole on and ‘loud up di ting’, cause her style ‘tun up’!

I need me an LBD

…or three.
and just in case you didn’t guess, I am making reference to the quintessential little black dress! For a while now I’ve realized that my scanty wardrobe could use one, but reality hit me like a thunderbolt a few weeks ago when I had to go to dinner and had nothing to wear!

An LBD would have been perfect. After all, it is said that when Coco Chanel debuted the LBD in the 1920’s, the editors at Vogue claimed it would become the uniform for the modern woman of taste. And as I pondered my dilemna; wondering what shoes might go with what dress and whether or not that dress was simple and elegant enough, it dawned on me that, had I been in possession of an LBD, the nightmare I was enduring would have been an easy fix!

In the end I wore a flowing long halter-top dress with flat sandals and a cap-sleeved cardigan (because dinner was held at a beach gazebo). I looked nice (I was told by a few admirers later), but I really would just have preferred a little black dress!

The Beach Gazebo

I do believe I will have one made! I am greatly inspired by what has been called the ‘definitive LBD’ – of course – Audrey Hepburn’s dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s!

I want my dress to have that same neck line; slightly lower in back and cinched (or slightly gathered) waist. Mine though, will stop just below my knees in a pencil design (as pictured below)!

The pencil dress: A modern favourite!

I’ve also been slowly developing quite an interest in vintage dresses, and think that this year (beginning in summer) will see me sporting one or two – throwing in an LBD can’t hurt 😉

For Example ;)

P.S. Not only was dinner delish!, the ambience was simply divine! I snuck in a little foodie pic of the first course, which was a tempura shrimp cocktail. It was delectable and a very big plus for me was that every herb &/or flower in the dish was edible and organic 😉

Kicks & Crop Tops

I looove hi-tops (sneakers), so I recently got myself a pair that I absolutely adore! I showed them to my (older) brother, who I believe has great taste in shoes and while he was quick to point out that the brand (Creative Recreations) is no longer trendy, he admitted that he thought they looked pretty darn good 😉

And I’m pleased, because that once again proves my philosophy that great style is not about donning what’s hot or trendy or fashionable; it’s about finding high quality, good looking pieces and wearing them well!

Many years ago my little brother told me he thought I was getting too old to wear hi tops… but I can’t be the picture of perfect sophistication every time I get dressed! Nope, gotta switch it up sometime.

That said, I think I’ll be rocking a few crop tops this summer. I figure since I don’t look my age, I don’t always have to act it 😉 Below is a look I put together on Polyvore that I think would be cute with my new kicks!

Inspiration for the Cut

In her video Bossy, there’s something about the way Kelis rolls out of bed, looks in the mirror, casually decides she wants to change her hair, grabs a pair of scissors and starts snipping away! It must be total and complete liberation, spontaneity and confidence that would make you get up and ‘change it up,’ just like that. And I LOVE IT!

I am no stranger to that and have cut my hair on three occasions. Two out of three times it was done as spontaneously as the above example 😉

I’ve  long loved Kelis’ trendsetting hairstyles and had my eye on one particular do since 2011.

I just got around to it for my birthday last month after drawing additional inspiration from Rihanna

In order to achieve the style I needed, I had to get a perm, but I love my new hair so much that I don’t regret it! Since I got it done, I’ve gone back and had them shave the sides right down, because it’s way easier to handle when it’s low like that. And I’ve gotten hella compliments! Ching 😉

The Heel Difference

What a difference a heel makes!

As fabulous as is Kim's figure, these heels highlight her voluptuous curves and add some sexiness to the dress!

I ‘m sure I must’ve mentioned before how a pair of heels can work wonders for your image, but I thought I’d just take some time to reiterate that.

Boyfriend jeans + heels ;)

Boyfriend jeans + heels 😉

Heels are fantastic! They can provide a woman with a sense of confidence and make her feel stylish (that is, of course, if she knows how to properly wear them ;). Because heels force the back to arch, they cause the chest and derriere to look more ample. They enhance nice legs and often makes them look longer. Heels can totally transform an outfit from average to fabulous!

See the difference.

See the difference.

They can be worn with shorts, skirts, dresses, jeans, tailored pants; the list is inexhaustible.

Personally I’m not a huge fan of wearing stilettos or even pumps casually, but a pair of wedges are perfect for such an occasion. They can be sexy and can totally ‘glam-up’ your appearance without looking ‘too fussy.’ They’re also easier to walk in if you have to wear them for long periods!

I love a good wedge heel!

That said, I dare you to don a pair of heels when next you’re going out! Do it and see the difference it makes. You’ll look & feel like a million bucks!

Seeing Red

So even though it’s been months since I decided to invest in some red lipstick, I just got around to getting it yesterday.

I decided to go with Mac Red as per the advice of  style guru Maylana and the lady in the boutique, but when I discovered the price, I had to scale down on account of the new bag and home splurges!

So what I got was an Espere lip colour

application could’ve been better – but just so you get an idea –

I think it looks good with the long hair; here’s to hoping it will look as great with my upcoming haircut 😉

Express Yourself!

I don’t even want to talk about my lack of presence, except to say I hope to improve in the coming weeks and definitely for the new year.

In the meantime a lot of things have been going on and I can’t wait to share!

Today though, I wanted to share this fabulous bag that I came across a couple of … months ago. Anyway, I fell in love!

Polished Pockets Convertible Satchel

Polished Pockets Convertible Satchel

It’s the Polished Pockets Convertible Satchel from Tignanello Bespoke. Not only is it sophisticated but the really great part about it is that when you purchase it you get to choose an embellishment and then personalize it your self! Is that cool or what?! But the goodies don’t stop there, you may also place a monogram on it if you wish!

Maybe I'd engrave something cool? :)

I’d engrave something cool – like, LIVING FOR THE CITY!

AND it comes in the cutest box with a bow – you know after you shell out lotsa money on an item, it’s such a great (value-added) treat when it comes looking all luxurious 🙂

The box!

The box!

The only sad part is that there is a word limit – haha – I guess that’s useful, I’d probably engrave a book if I had the chance!

But don’t take my word for it , check it out in the link below (in orange):

and Santa, since I defended your existence and commitment to adults so passionately last week…um…couldn’t hurt to leave one of these by my door?!

Vintage Views

The glasses are in!

– or ‘specatcles,’ as the receptionist from the opthalmologist’s office put it.

If you’ve been following, you know the story of these frames.

They are so cute – but I can’t quite say everyone endorses this feeling. This doesn’t surprise me though because these frames are not in vogue, have an ‘old-fashioned’ look and nothing similar has been seen on a popular celeb.

That said, I did get a compliment that the ‘nerdy’ look becomes me 😉

But I am just loving them; see for yourself…

Soon I shall post photos of myself in the new uniform; ascot blouse, kick-pleat skirt, spectacles and oxfords. I’ll be reigning the work scene in vintage glory 😀

Sweetest Style of the Week ~ Sheena’s Statement Necklace

I have a thing for ‘natural’ jewellery. That is, jewellery made of stones, beads, wood etc. I also like creative jewellery and really lovely statement necklaces – you know, the kind that make you look twice!

So it should come as no surprise that when I saw this photo,

Sheena Gayle – Communications Specialist & Founder of MediaConnec.com

I was completely enamored! Sheena’s necklace is gorg!! and I love how it complements the blues in her bohemian skirt. Wearing that ‘earthy’ sort of necklace with that skirt gives the outfit a really alluring island vibe ~ not to mention that smile that’s oozing sunshine 😉
Pairing the skirt with the gray top is also a good choice as it doesn’t steal the limelight from the skirt and works well with ensemble. Its rounded neck is also perfect for accommodating the necklace!
